This print was made by Sekiya about 50 years ago.
Sekiya spent his childhood in Tokyo and moved to Okinawa as an adult.
When he moved, he was attracted to the plaster shisa in his neighborhood and sketched them as he walked around the area.
Sekiya was originally a shisa craftsman.
He loves shisa so much that he says they were his friends, and the plaster shisa he painted are lively and seem to have happy expressions.
He kindly brought out the print that he had stored in his studio,
so we will be displaying it at his solo exhibition.
Incidentally, the shisa-patterned vessels that he has made for this solo exhibition were made by line engraving based on this sketch. . . It is apparently a first attempt at this.
They are quite valuable items, so please come and see them. . . 🙇♀️
